With Thanksgiving just a day away and the holiday hustle in full swing, you may find yourself knee-deep in the chaos, trying to check off that never-ending to-do list. It's a wonderful season, but the busyness can sometimes overshadow the reason why we celebrate.
In the midst of all the craziness and "doing", I wanted to encourage you with 3 Thanksgiving Read-Aloud Stories from History that highlight the providences of God. My prayer is that these incredible accounts will help spark a spirit of thanksgiving and reflection on God's goodness in your home this holiday!
These short stories include:
These stories are a way to bring the focus back to what this holiday is all about—thanking God for His abundant mercies throughout history, and reflecting on how He "daily loads us with benefits." (Psalm 68:19)
So I'd encourage you—read one or two of these stories aloud during the Thanksgiving meal and take an opportunity to reflect on God's goodness this holiday. Your family will be blessed as a result.
As you and your family reflect on the amazing greatness and providences of our God this season, take a moment to consider (or even sing together!) the words of this powerful hymn:
O worship the King all-glorious above,
O gratefully sing his power and his love:
our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days,
pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise.
O tell of his might and sing of his grace,
whose robe is the light, whose canopy space.
His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,
and dark is his path on the wings of the storm.
Your bountiful care, what tongue can recite?
It breathes in the air, it shines in the light;
it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain,
and sweetly distills in the dew and the rain.
Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,
in you do we trust, nor find you to fail.
Your mercies, how tender, how firm to the end,
our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend!
You can read more stories of the greatness of God in our Taking the World for Jesus series, a history course that focuses on the magnificent works of God around the world. These are great read-aloud books for your whole family.
Above all, seek to give God the glory He deserves this season.
Happy Thanksgiving!
